CSL Social Hour – March 7, 2014

The social hour will be held from 3PM-4PM in the CSL lounge (Room 369).

Everybody affiliated with CSL is welcome at the social (students, postdocs, faculty, research scientists, etc.).

Remote Sensing and Space Sciences

This week our speaker will be Dan Fisher.

Abstract: Our remote sensing group uses passive optical techniques to measure parameters of the neutral thermosphere, hoping to better understand the complex physics in this region .  Recently, we have turned some attention to observing gravity waves in these instruments in order to learn how well the earth and the upper atmosphere are coupled.  I will briefly discuss how gravity waves can be observed in our current instrumentation and explain the goals of our imager installation in Tahiti.

CSL Social Hour – February 28, 2014

The second social hour will be held from 3PM-4PM in the CSL lounge (Room 369).

Everybody affiliated with CSL is welcome at the social (students, postdocs, faculty, research scientists, etc.).

Our speakers for this week:

Communications

Jiaming Xu will be talking about talk about user preference prediction in the context of noisy/partial/hidden user preferences.

CSL Social Hour – February 14, 2014

jed_taylor_head

This week, Jed Taylor from the Technology Entrepreneur Center will be talking about TEC’s resources available to researchers in CSL including the Illinois I-Corps Site, which is part of the NSF’s program to commercialize technology out of our research labs.

There will be no social hour on February 21, 2014. Instead, the CSL student conference will be running, filled with talks by CSL students on their research, and several exciting keynote speakers.

The 9th annual CSL Student Conference (http://studentconference.csl.illinois.edu) will be next week on February 20th-21st. Lunch will be provided on both days of the conference, as will dinner on the first night.

Please make sure to register and attend the conference!

CSL Social Hour – February 7, 2014

The second social hour will be held from 3PM-4PM in the CSL lounge (Room 369).

Everybody affiliated with CSL is welcome at the social (students, postdocs, faculty, research scientists, etc.).

Our speakers for this week:

Remote Sensing

pablo_reyes

Pablo M. Reyes will be talking about his work on probing the equatorial ionosphere with radars and rockets during the NASA/EVEX campaign at Kwajalein during May 2013. He will talk about radar observations of “sunset electrodynamics” of the equatorial ionosphere during the NASA/EVEX(Equatorial vortex experiment) campaign at Kwajalein on May 2013. The sequence of the ALTAIR radar scans  will be shown together with the trajectory of a couple of rockets and satellite passes during the experiment. In the radar scans the initiation, development and evolution of equatorial plasma bubble instabilities will be pointed out.

Decision & Control
